WHEN A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) strives to improve the welfare of wildand domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation ofanimals, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress. Like manynon-profits, they seek to educate the public, governments, and other constituentsthrough effective communications and grassroots advocacy. When IFAW pairs theseefforts with the right image or video, they increase the impact of their message. When these combined efforts succeed they raise awareness and increase donorparticipation.

With its headquarters in Hyannis, Massachusetts, IFAW serves a global constituencythrough 200 campaign workers, legal and political experts, and scientists workingfrom 15 country offices worldwide. While these teams work in different timezones and locations, they all have a common need – to share, post, and accessimages and other forms of marketing communications collateral 24 hours a days /7 days a week.

IFAW's image library represents one of its most important communication tools. Compiled over the 30-year history of the organization, the library includes over16,000 images of some of the most unique animals and wildlife habitats in the world. IFAW knew that the right picture could amplify the power of their message andinspire action. For this reason, IFAW considered its library to be one of the crownjewels in its organization, a key asset for communication, education, and action.

THE EMOTION PLATFORM QUICKLY BRINGS MEDIA ASSETS TO A WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE

IFAW first approached eMotion in 1999 when they realized they had a seriousproblem: the crown jewel of the organization, its library of 16,000+ images, wasfrequently under utilized and expensive to manage. With the library split betweenLondon and the US headquarters, IFAW staff spent precious resources managingthe library, sending packages across the Atlantic, and fulfilling image requestsfrom the press, fund-raising groups, volunteers, and other important constituents.“Using eMotion's service has helped us make the most outof our digital assets. Our assets have gone from being acollection of dusty images in an archive to one of our keybranding and communication tools.”– Jennifer Ferguson-Mitchell,Deputy Director of Communications, IFAWChallengeHow can an organization that depends on effective communication use its library of 16,000 images to improve its communications efforts without creatingadditional work for a small IT department? SolutionUse the eMotion hosted digital asset management solution to transform andexpand a collection of dusty images into a self-service digital communications platform that requires no training and canbe accessed over the web 24x7 by bothinternal and external users.OutcomeA powerful branding and communicationstool that has improved fundraising initiatives around the globe, raised awareness about their cause, and increasedthe reuse of assets.

After evaluating several alternatives, IFAW chose the hosted eMotion solution toorganize, manage, store, and distribute this library of images around the world. Bychoosing a hosted service, they needed no internal IT staff for this implementation –a choice which not only kept their costs down but freed-up existing staff to spendmore time on their core mission – improving the welfare of animals around the world.

IFAW felt comfortable placing these valuable assets outside of their organizationand the control of their IT department because they recognized the importance thateMotion places on security and reliability. The eMotion application and data centerhave passed security audits from some of the most security conscious companies inthe world. More importantly, eMotion protects every customer's valuable data in thesame way, regardless of their size or level of service use. As a result, IFAW gets thebenefits of enterprise software - security, scalability, reliability, and redundancy - ata fraction of the cost.

Today the IFAW image library - powered by eMotion's hosted service - supports 400registered users around the world, including photo editors, field offices, fund raisingarms, and media representatives. A permission driven interface simplifies the taskof making the library available to the largest number of users by enabling IFAW tocontrol the level of visibility and access to assets by individual user or group.eMotion's patented natural language search helps any user quickly locate the rightimage by typing in keywords, taglines, or ideas.

For most companies and organizations, permitting more users to view and requestimages or marketing content, would drive both labor and shipping costs up. ForIFAW, the opposite has occurred. The direct costs and time delays related to shippingphotos, CDs, and other media have been virtually eliminated.

By making their digital media assets accessible, IFAW transformed a collection ofonce dusty images into reusable assets. More importantly, as use of the application increased, users began to include other important media such as brand logos, video, and other communications documents increasing the return on investmentmade by IFAW.

A library that once consumed internal resources has now grown to become one ofIFAW's most valuable assets, thanks to eMotion's powerful hosted service.
